More than 100,000 Cambodian workers in Thailand could face arrest and deportation after the deadline for reapplying for a work permit extension expired.
According to Thailand-based migrant expert and workers’ rights advocate Andy Hall, talking to the Phnom Penh Post, it was “not possible” for the government to re-register the huge number of workers in time. This raises the risk of another mass exodus, as seen in 2014, when nearly a quarter of a million Cambodian workers fled back across the border after the Thai junta cracked down on illegal migrants.
